As is often the case, the rainy season tends to be prolonged, with high ambient humidity that creates ideal conditions for bacterial growth—so much so that some people refer to it as the “mold season.” During this time, many items are particularly prone to damage, and hydraulic cylinders are no exception. Here, we’re focusing on outdoor‑use hydraulic cylinders; by contrast, those typically employed indoors or within machinery experience far less exposure to external environmental factors. However, when exposed to the outdoors—subject to rain, erosion, and other weather‑related influences—hydraulic cylinders can easily develop surface rust, accumulate moisture inside, and even allow residues to settle in the cylinder bore. So how can you ensure their safe protection? Below, we’ve outlined several key measures for your consideration.

  1. Surface maintenance and care for hydraulic cylinders: Regularly touch up the paint before it begins to chip, which can effectively prevent damage caused by smog and environmental pollutants.

  2. Use a grinder to surface‑treat the scratched area, grinding and polishing down to a depth of approximately 1 mm. Then, along the slide rail, grind and polish to create a groove; a V‑shaped slot may be used. Drill holes on both sides of the scratch to increase weight and alter the stress distribution.

  3. Use a cotton swab dipped in toluene or industrial ethanol to thoroughly clean the surface.

  4. Apply the metal‑material repair compound to the scratched surface; ensure the first layer is thin, evenly distributed, and fully covers the scratch to promote strong adhesion between the material and the metal substrate. After spreading the compound over the entire repair area, press gently several times to compact it and achieve the desired thickness, thereby raising the surface of the proportioning rail.
